CASE STUDY
Thackray's provide solution to sinking porch
Cambridgeshire based subsidence repair company, Edward Thackray, have come to the assistance of a Thetford couple when cracks appeared in their home.
To make life easier for the home-owner, who had suffered three serious heart attacks, a downstairs porch incorporating a WC had been added to the front of their house. Unfortunately one end of the structure subsided some time after it had been built and a claim was lodged with their insurers. A national firm of loss adjusters, appointed by the insurers, approached ASUCplus members Edward Thackray Building Limited for a design and build solution which would be covered by the ASUC 12-year insurance-backed guarantee.
Edward Thackray Building Limited’s structural engineer investigated the soil conditions in the locality and as a result of their findings, recommended a mini pile solution rather than underpinning.
The picture shows the mini piling rig in position driving the first of four hollow steel piles down to a depth of 8 metres which were later filled with concrete. Two reinforced concrete ground beams were then cast over the pile caps, diagonally across the two front corners of the porch. This allowed the structure to be jacked upright and thereby solving the home-owners sinking porch.
The homeowner is delighted with the solution: "I was so pleased to see the piling rig arrive as I knew then that something serious was being done to solve the cracks that appeared in my porch." Not only have their problems been solved but they have the peace of mind that the work has been carried out by a specialist contractor and is covered by the ASUCplus guarantee.
